About data units

Binary vs decimal

Computers traditionally use binary multiples (1 KB = 1024 bytes). Disk manufacturers usually use decimal multiples (1 KB = 1000 bytes). The gap grows: a "1 TB" disk is closer to 0.91 binary TB once your OS counts it.

Frequently asked

How many MB in a GB?
In binary terms (the way operating systems count), 1 GB = 1024 MB. In decimal (the way drive labels count), 1 GB = 1000 MB.
How many bits in a byte?
Eight. So a kilobyte is 8,192 bits.
