About fuel economy units
Efficiency vs consumption
mpg and km/L measure efficiency — higher is better. L/100 km measures consumption — lower is better. Because they’re inverses, you can’t just multiply: 235.215 ÷ mpg (US) = L/100 km. Watch out, too, for US vs imperial gallons.
Common fuel-economy units
Miles per US gallon (mpg)
The US standard. Based on the 3.785 L US gallon.
Miles per imperial gallon
The UK figure. The imperial gallon (4.546 L) is ~20% bigger, so UK mpg looks higher for the same car.
Kilometers per liter (km/L)
Common in Japan, India, and parts of Asia. Higher is better.
Liters per 100 km (L/100 km)
The European standard. Lower is better — it’s consumption, not efficiency.
Frequently asked
What is 30 mpg in L/100 km?
About 7.84 L/100 km (using US gallons). The relationship is inverse: 235.215 ÷ mpg = L/100 km.
Why are US and UK mpg different?
The imperial (UK) gallon is about 20% larger than the US gallon, so UK mpg figures look higher for the same vehicle.
Is a lower L/100 km better?
Yes — L/100 km measures consumption, so smaller is more efficient. mpg and km/L are the opposite: higher is better.
